A Slipstream ride is designed to be relaxed and sociable, but a little preparation always makes the day run more smoothly. Most riders have their own routines and preferences, but there are a few essentials that tend to appear in everyone’s jersey pockets.
Here are five things most riders bring along for a day out with Slipstream.
The basics for the bike
No one enjoys a mechanical, but they do happen. A spare inner tube, tyre levers and a small pump or CO₂ canister are the simple essentials that most riders carry. Even though we have a support vehicle on larger rides, it’s always worth being self-sufficient for the small fixes.
Fuel for the ride
Slipstream routes usually include a good coffee stop and lunch, but it’s still important to keep energy levels steady along the way. A couple of gels, bars or snacks in a jersey pocket can make all the difference, particularly during the first half of the ride.
A layer for the weather
British riding conditions can change quickly, even on the best days. A lightweight gilet or packable jacket is an easy addition that takes up very little space but makes a big difference if the wind picks up or the temperature drops. Our support driver is more than happy to keep them safe when they’re not needed!
A fully charged phone
Phones are useful for more than just photos. They help with route checks, quick messages and keeping in touch if the group naturally splits into smaller clusters along the road. Again, we’re more than happy to keep them safe when not in use.
A good attitude
This might be the most important one. Slipstream rides are about more than just the miles; they’re about the conversations that happen along the way. Turning up ready to ride, chat and enjoy the day is what makes the experience what it is.
